Bengaluru woman exposes pricing differences on Apple versus Android platforms

A woman from Bengaluru has discovered new data showing how quick-commerce sites employ distinct pricing schemes for consumers of Android and Apple devices. In a straightforward experiment, Instagram user Pooja Chhabda found that Zepto charges iPhone customers more than twice as much for the identical goods as Android users.

Chhabda launched Zepto on an Android phone and an iPhone. She demonstrated how 500 grams of grapes cost ₹65 on the Android phone. However, the same quantity of grapes cost more than twice as much (₹146) for Apple iPhone customers.

Users of iPhones have paid extra for the identical goods in other cases. Chhabda also showed how, on Zepto, capsicum was priced at ₹37 on an Android device, while on her iPhone, it was ₹69. The Bengaluru woman, who was astounded by the "significant disparity," urged her followers to see if using an iPhone was costing them extra as well.

The perceived disparities in user demographics are frequently cited as the reason for the pricing discrepancy between Apple and Android. E-commerce sites can think that iPhone users are more likely to pay more since they have more money to spend.

In the comments section, viewers expressed as much.

One Instagram user said, "I think the logic is that you must be willing to pay extra for everything when you can pay so much more for the same features that are available on some Androids."

Another person commented, "It's a very serious issue and if this continues.. I will definitely re-think continuing with iPhone."

It's more about low-cost phones versus high-end phones than an iPhone versus Android. According to one user's theory, "you will notice the differences not only in prices but also in availability, delivery times, etc."

For this story, Zepto chose not to comment.
