At a gathering in Herndon, Virginia, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi provoked controversy with comments about religious freedom in India, particularly addressing the Sikh community.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition and a Congress MP, caused a political whirlwind when he spoke at a US event on the situation of religious freedom in India, giving the Sikh community as an example.
The debate in India centers on whether or not Sikhs are permitted to wear turbans, don kada, or visit Gurudwaras, Rahul Gandhi stated on Monday while speaking at an event in Herndon, Virginia. That is the subject of the conflict, which affects all religions, not just Sikhs.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly objected to Gandhi's comments toward Sikhs.

3,000 Sikhs were slaughtered in Delhi in 1984; they had their beards cut, their hair chopped off, and their turbans removed. Gandhi, according to BJP national spokesperson RP Singh, ignores the Congress party's own history with the Sikh minority by failing to highlight that this occurred during the party's rule.
Singh threatened legal action if Gandhi repeated his comments on Indian territory. Singh vowed to bring a lawsuit against him and drag him to court.
In response to Rahul Gandhi's remarks, Union Minister Giriraj Singh remarked, "The Congress is trying to lecture us. It has long engaged in appeasement politics and was responsible for the Sikh massacre." Though those who failed to secure more than 99 seats are now boasting about securing 400, Rahul Gandhi boldly declared in writing that he will provide 400 seats. Such assertions will require a vigorous response from us. Meanwhile, with more votes than even his grandmother, PM Modi is back in power for a third term.
Anti-Sikhriots in 1984
Following Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984, there were several violent attacks on the Sikh community in India, especially in Delhi, which resulted in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Thousands of Sikhs were slain over several days, along with the destruction of their houses and businesses and the rape of numerous women.
RAHUL GANDHI’S US VISIT

It is Rahul Gandhi's second day of a three-day tour to the United States. Speaking at many US events, the Congress MP leveled a barrage of sharp criticisms against the BJP. Rahul Gandhi charged the BJP of fomenting an atmosphere of fear and exclusion at one of the gatherings on Monday in the United States.
Gandhi's journey to the US is a part of a larger outreach initiative that also included interactions with US lawmakers and University of Texas students. His three-day visit coincides with important elections for assembly in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana as well as the US presidential contest in November.
