Suryakumar Yadav to be Named India’s New T20I Captain Instead of Hardik Pandya; Here is Why

Suryakumar Yadav is poised to take on the role of India's new T20I captain for the upcoming series in Sri Lanka, surpassing Hardik Pandya, who currently serves as the vice-captain. Suryakumar will succeed Rohit Sharma, who retired from T20Is along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja after leading India to T20 World Cup victory in the Caribbean last month.

Despite Hardik Pandya’s experience as Rohit's deputy at the T20 World Cup and his captaincy in three ODIs and sixteen T20Is, fitness concerns and workload management appear to have influenced the decision against him. Hardik sustained an ankle injury during the 50-over World Cup at home last October-November, which kept him sidelined until the beginning of IPL 2024, when he made his comeback to captain the Mumbai Indians. Since the start of 2022, Hardik has featured in only forty-six of the seventy-nine T20Is India have played.

Suryakumar Yadav, on the other hand, has previously captained Mumbai in the domestic circuit. He most recently guided India to a 4-1 victory against Australia in the T20I series in November, and then achieved a 1-1 series result in South Africa. Suryakumar is also one of the first names in a first-choice India XI in the format.

India's upcoming T20Is in Sri Lanka will mark the beginning of a new era under the leadership of coach Gautam Gambhir, succeeding Rahul Dravid following the T20 World Cup. This tour is seen as the first step towards building for the next T20 World Cup, which India is set to co-host in 2026.
