The International League T20 (ILT20) has become a cornerstone for cricket development in the UAE, offering unparalleled opportunities for local players. By mandating a minimum of two UAE players in the playing XI, the league ensures homegrown talent can compete against world-class athletes. Aayan Afzal Khan, a promising UAE cricketer and left-arm spinner, has praised the league for its role in nurturing local talent and providing a springboard to international recognition.
Aayan, who recently represented the UAE in the U19 Asia Cup, is set for his third season with the Gulf Giants in ILT20 2025. He views the league as pivotal for players aiming to showcase their skills and believes performances here can lead to opportunities in other franchise leagues globally. "This league is very important because it gives opportunities to local players to compete against international players," Aayan remarked.

The Gulf Giants have been a standout franchise since the ILT20's inception. Crowned champions in the inaugural season, they followed up with a strong playoff finish in 2024. Aayan, reflecting on his time with the team, described it as a family-like environment where every player contributes meaningfully. “The first season was very good for our team because we won that season. In the second season, we qualified for the playoffs,” he said, highlighting the team’s consistent performances.
In 2024, Aayan’s six wickets in eight matches underscored his growing impact. He recalled a standout performance against Sharjah Warriorz, where he claimed two wickets in his first over. "That was special for me because it gave our team a great start, and we won that match comfortably," he noted.
The youthful spinner underlined how crucial player performances are fuelled by fan support. Aayan urged UAE fans to continue their unwavering support, as seen in the first season when the Gulf Giants lifted the trophy. "Hopefully, we’ll win again this time. Thank you to all the fans and supporters who come to the stadiums,” he said, underlining the significant role of spectators in the league’s success.
Looking ahead, Aayan expressed optimism about the league's future and its role in inspiring more UAE players to pursue cricket. He believes the ILT20’s consistent efforts to include and develop local talent have set a strong foundation for the sport in the region.
ILT20 Season 3 promises thrilling competition, with franchises retaining global superstars like Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Alex Hales, and David Warner. The Gulf Giants, Aayan’s team, boast key players such as Chris Jordan, Shimron Hetmyer, and Ibrahim Zadran. New additions like Jason Holder, Gus Atkinson, and Tim Southee add depth to already formidable squads.
The season opener on January 12, 2025, between Gulf Giants and Sharjah Warriorz at the Dubai International Stadium, is eagerly anticipated. With the inclusion of new talent and seasoned professionals, ILT20 continues to elevate cricket in the UAE while delivering world-class entertainment to fans.
