Based on rumors that gold was being smuggled between Khararmath and the Pipli border outpost, the jawans set up an ambush in front of the barrier.

On Monday, Bangladeshi smugglers used sharp weapons to attack Border Security Forces (BSF) jawans close to a border station in the North 24 Pargana area of West Bengal.

Smugglers with sticks and sharp weapons targeted one of the Jawans of the 05 Battalion while they were on duty. Jawans fired in self-defense, stopping the attempted smuggling.

Based on rumors that gold was being smuggled between Khararmath and the Pipli border outpost, the jawans set up an ambush in front of the barrier.

They noticed four smugglers approaching the fence swiftly around 11:15 p.m. with pointed guns. The smugglers attacked, but the jawans retaliated.

The jawans opened fire in reprisal, forcing the traffickers to escape to Bangladesh.

"A smuggler was confronted once more while attempting to cross the river, but instead of stopping, he approached the jawan angrily while brandishing a sharp object in his hand. The Bangladeshi smuggler became frightened at this point and leaped into the Ichhamati River, which was full of roughly two feet of water hyacinth. Taking advantage of the water hyacinth, he fled. The jawan then shot another round in self-defense. The BSF said in a statement that "it cannot be ruled out that any smugglers injured in this firing in self-defense may suffer injuries."

Knives with sharp edges were found at the scene during more searches.

Recent attacks along the South Bengal Frontier have seen jawans firing in self-defense and seizing drugs in the border outposts of Ranghat, Jeetpur, Madhupur, and Sasni.

A formal protest against the attack was filed after the occurrence, and a meeting with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) was convened. The local police station has received a preliminary report.
